Why we love it
A fascinating piece of Australian jewellery history by H. Simonsen of Melbourne. This fantastic brooch features a slender glass tube filled with opal chips, creating wonderful flashes of green, blue and rainbow colour as it catches the light. The tube is finished with warm 9ct gold caps and decorative ends, giving it a distinctive late 19th to early 20th century character.
It's a charming and wearable example of the inventive jewellery produced in Australia during the period. Pieces like this feel less like conventional jewellery and more like miniature historical treasures - decorative, clever, nostalgic and full of personality. While designed as a brooch, its elongated tubular form also lends itself to creative modern styling and it could even make an intriguing chain extender or decorative connector.
A delightful addition to a collection of antique Australian jewellery, opal memorabilia or unusual antique brooches.
Before you buy
How do you authenticate your pieces?
We carefully assess every piece using our gemmological training, specialist tools, and industry experience. We are both GIA Graduate Gemmologists and have also completed the Applied Jewelry Professional (AJP) qualification.
We work closely with our jeweller, who has almost 50 years of experience and is also a qualified gemmologist.
Carat weights are estimates based on measurements taken in the setting unless otherwise stated. Precise weights can only be obtained from loose stones. Many of our diamonds are old cuts, which are often asymmetrical and not calibrated due to traditional hand-cutting techniques.
We aim to provide clear photos and videos from multiple angles to help you purchase with confidence.
